CPU Processor woes

Bought a new Processor hoping to get better FPS from my grahics card. Old one was a AMD FX-6300 6 core and new one is a AMD FX-8350 8 core.

Noticed right away the CPU usage went way down from 85% before to now about 65%. A little bit of improvement in FPS.

Then I noticed while game was running the FPS doing drops down to the red zone then back up in the green. Something wrong here.

This one guy in my squad (Wearing a purple shirt) gave me all kinds of helpful advice. "Dude, that's not suppose to do that!" and "Get a 4 core CPU like mine."

Anyway, so I googled FX-8359 problems and I found a couple of posts from users stating their CPU FPS was nose diving when temps go above 55c degrees. Then someone would suggest he needed a better heat sink or maybe the VRM on motherboard was degrading when it gets hot.

So I decided to open computer case to let it breath better and lo and behold I played a good round with no FPS drops.

I do have one 3" fan blowing air out back and my Corsair 600 power supply just throws our a little for some reason. Maybe I need another couple of fans in back? One other note, the thermal paste I got from BestBuy was regular stuff but 5 grams and the other package that had fancy words on it was a dollar more but only 3.3 grams. So a dollar is a dollar.

I had FX8350 so i sold to my bro ( never had any problem ) what kind cpu cooler you got and the thermal paste i would never buy from bestbuy :highly_amused: ..

When you play any game , do you using fan to control at full speed to keep it cooler ? / even the gpu new driver will not turn on fan till 50c i think so that why i get msi afterburn for GPU ..

On my last build to Bro which has normal cpu fans so i add " SpeedFans " for CPU unless you got water cooler .

For thermal paste ( make it flat thin ) the more put and it will not cool down /

It's didn't said what CPU it will fit in but what i found out about that " ThinkStation P900 160W Active Heat Sink supports ThinkStation P900 system, fully qualified to provide you quite, reliable cooling for Xeon CPU "

Look for heatsink that is fx 8350 compatible heatsink ( like list here https://pcpartpicker.com/products/cpu-cooler/?compatible_with=ykphP6#m=99 ) or something like that .

I can't remember which one i had but look like that https://pcpartpicker.com/product/4vzv6h/noctua-cpu-cooler-nhd15

In my old pc which is the one I currently use now for the moment, I have an FX-6200 and a GTX 1050 as well as an almost identical CPU heatsink with factory thermal paste. While it never got great fps, it was always stable around 80fps even when temps spiked to the 60s. You may need to reseat the heatsink again as well as make sure it doesnt have a lot of dust clogged up around the edges of the fan that touches the metal part inside (my biggest issue with that setup). The cpu fan itself will always be spinning even before it reaches 50 degrees. Granted I did not run the game above low to medium settings, so if you're using higher settings, that may be the cause of extra load and heat byproduct. Try running it at the next resolution down from yours that uses your correct aspect ratio as well as turning down a couple of other options such as terrain detail and Anti-Aliasing etc then see how it holds up.

Panda, I just changed my settings to 80 FPS before you responded and the game ran alright. Changing it to 90 FPS next to see what happens. The CPU temp reached 51c. The CPU fan does change in rpm based on temps (which I could see in the BIOS HW section).

Will redo the thermal compound tomorrow and order some better paste.

Holy shit, I look like a radish or purple onion. No wonder everyone can spot me :(

Generally speaking CPU’s do not thermal throttle the speed down until you hit 80C , during gaming even with my CPU’s unparked and overclocked playing BF4 my CPU never gets over 50C , I have the same exact cooler on my CPU ..

This one throttles down about 52c. My 6 core never goes over 45c. I have the cpu temp being recorded while playing and that does happen with this paticular processor. My Google finds a couple of complaints from other users concerning this issue. Waiting for another type of thermal paste and I'm adding another fan outside case pulling air out from PSU and relieving the high temps in case from the heatsink.

Yeah you are right, each one is different , just looked up mine here..

77.72C... But I have only seen it go into the high 50's

Yours is 61C

I also remember something about how Intel processors have an easier time with the BF games then the AMD chipsets , I'm referencing the last generation of AMD chips (Bulldozer architecture )

The other thing I'll add, I have had really good luck with Arctic Silver, I re-apply it at least once a year, clean the heat sink and processor cap very good don't clamp the heat sink to tightly or you squish all the thermal paste out the sides.. lol.

Dont clamp down all the way? Hmmmm... I've been screwing those post down until they stop.

They are spring loaded so they are supposed to not allow full clamp down once the screws hit bottom, I was told that you should always do quarter turn on each screw so that the pressure is coming down evenly so that you don’t squeeze the thermal paste out .. I have had more than a few botched thermal paste jobs.. and the difference has always been 10C , I can always tell when I screwed up .. but not sure what your baseline is temp wise since it’s a new processor

Agree with that .

Make sure to get old card to cut and use it spread thermal paste very thin smooth .

Here the Link of Application methods for applying thermal compound http://www.arcticsilver.com/amd_application_method.html# / that might help you with that :friendly_wink:

I still want to dive into the world of water cooling, I'm not upgrading my rig this year so that might be a nice thing to keep me busy while improving my rig , the four 120mm fans are loud even when nothings going on ...

Preferably you may want to get a liquid cooler that you don't have to fill up and can just replace every 5 or so years.
