STARLINK!

does anyone game using starlink as their primary internet?

After about 10 months I was finally notified that my order was confirmed for my northern MI compound, so I can get decent internet finally! I'm sooo excited because that was the last main thing I needed for comfort there.

The internet that was available there had a low ping to the server, just really low speed, so I could play barely but would get disconnected.

anyways here is a pic of my cabin, pretty good bug out spot in northern MI (by Torch Lake, google that, it is beautiful!) if shit gets rough :D

Hey! Looks like the cabins we have here in Gayord, not very far you!

Sweet!

That's definitely an area I'll have to get more familiar with. Mainly only been thru, but being close to I-75 must be convenient.

In Colorado I'm just a few minutes from the interstate highway, which is nice. Here it's like 40 minutes past the end of the highway ?

The speed might be better, but I doubt the latency will be lower. Definitely let us know how it is to connect to the servers!
Nice cabin btw
A quick google search is reporting 17ms-47ms, which blows away the competition. I really want to know how well it fares with FPS gaming.

Jmonty, you gotta throw us an update when you have it up and running.

Good house. This house is not decoration. It needs about 100000 to 200000 yuan in China, which is slightly equivalent to more than 10000 to 30000 US dollars.

it has been permanently mounted for a few days, when we played together yesterday it was on Starlink!

i wanted it on the very peak of my house by i have limited ladders and the metal roof is slick. i was able to stand up on the porch roof which is less severe of an angle, and get it mounted.

if i need to move it this summer i will probably just build a permanent ladder on the roof so i can crawl up and access it.

during heavy rain storms the speed is still 75+ mbps and it occasionally disconnects but not any more than when i was on a land line in colorado. a price increase was announced yesterday, the base unit is now $600 and it is $110/month but for people with no other option it really is amazing.

spacex is even helping out a competitor with launches, which is how secure they are with their system.

about 1/5 times the game will freeze while launching, but i suspect that is my pc or the software, not related to the internet.

On a related note, Starlink is being used in Ukraine by an elite drone unit to guide a variety of UAVs over Russian forces at night to pick off strategically valuable vehicles with anit-tank grenades.

Yes! That's awesome, I saw that unfold on Twitter. A Ukraine official asked Elon directly and ten hours later got a reply. I think it was just a few days after that when dishies (starlink says) started to arrive. I'd screen shot it but posting pics here is unnecessarily complicated and limited.

Their original dishies required a ground station but the newer ones are connected via laser black magic fuckery directly between each other so there's no infrastructure besides the individual units, so Russia can't realistically target it.

I hope it's true that they can't target these dishes. I saw a news story about the railroads in Ukraine where they mentioned having Starlink installed on the trains but mostly kept it turned off because they were afraid of being targeted.

I mean I'm sure they could but there's thousands already. I imagine the Ukrainians use them quickly then unplug or somehow coordinate to avoid attacks

Yeah that would be a lot of precision munitions to expend on targets that you don't know anything about. One theory about the hypersonic missile usage is that Russia may be running low on conventional guided weapons and these new high tech sexy hypersonic things are being used more for psychological effect than anything else.

Some good news from Elon on Twitter yesterday:

>Starlink, at least so far, has resisted all hacking & jamming attempts

That's great news! I'd love to get a look inside their cyber ops center or wherever Starlink has people who monitor and counter these threats.

To any of you younger members who may be unsure of what to study in college, please consider a cybersecurity degree. It's also an available career path when enlisting in the military these days (for example, the U.S. Army has MOS 17C Cyber Operations Specialist). I wish this was a thing when I was a kid in high school trying to choose my path in life!
