I'm looking for some guidance in building a new desktop computer. I'd like some advice for a build that would not cost a fortune, but be able to handle most games on the market to date? It would be nice to run BF4 in Ultra high mode without any issues..lol I recently upgraded my ISP to fiber-optics that is suppose to get 1GB both down and upload speeds. Unfortunately I have a rather long run of cat5e cable that runs to the back of my house to my shop/mancave. The tech said that I should replace that cable to cat6 to get faster speeds?? Not sure how much more, but I ran a few speed test using speedtest.net, and it shows I am getting around 500mbps download/980mbps upload. Not sure why I am getting like half the download speed as the upload speed? Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advanced!

How much are you looking to spend and are you planning on keeping any of your current hardware?

I just build a partially new computer. I got an Ryzen 5800X, Vetroo V5 cooler, MSI B550 mobo and a Lian Li case. Im using my old graphics card, power supply, ram, nvme and HHD drives.

The swap was pretty easy too. I didnt want to do a new windows install and didnt need to. Might have to clean up some older unnecessary software. Only issue Im having is some software I need is asking for an activation code which I dont have ?. Probably cause it recognizes a new CPU.

Hi whitefish, The pc I have has an i5-3570K cpu, ASUS P8Z77-V LK mother board, I upgraded the RAM to 16gb, GPU is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost. I also have a 750 watt power supply? I'm not sure if I can keep my RAM sticks for a newer mother board? I'd like to keep the cost say around or below $2000. What are your thoughts?? Thanks again! :)

I can put together some suggestions and I think $2000 can get you a lot in this current pricing climate.

Your ram wont work since its DDR3. You'll need DDR4. The newer systems are using DDR5 but its still pretty pricey for those setups.

Do you prefer Intel or AMD for your CPU?

Do you plan on keeping your keyboard, mouse and monitor or are those going to be replaced too?

Ive been thinking about building a new one too. Totally new except for the storage drives. Ill probably give my brother my old one.
Im currently thinking ryzen 5 5600, EVGA or Gigabyte 3080 or 3070 Ti GPU, 32 GB ram, Gigabyte X570 motherboard, Corsair 4000D case, 850 W PSU, and planning on running the stock cooler for the CPU - I read they were decent. Should I invest in a aftermarket CPU fan?
Im kinda waiting for some good sales...although there are already some decent sales running on some items

Thats a really nice case and was my second choice. Id suggest you go with the 4000D airflow case instead though. Same case but much better airflow through the front. Gamers Nexus did a test with the two and found the airflow on average had 10 degree difference in CPU temps under load ?

@ about the 13:50 mark

Thanks guys for your input! Perhaps I can build one a little cheaper than I thought. I'm not trying to build the ultimate gaming PC, just one that would be able to compete with todays world..lol So I guess it's really a choice of manufacture's brands? AMD vs Intel, etc? Is Newegg a good place to buy as far as pricing, or do they have better places out there?

I guess now I will start from scratch again..lol As far as AMD vs Intel, which one would you recommend? I'm guessing they would both perform close to the same? Also, what brand mother board would you recommend? Thanks again!

Well, the winner for cheaper system is AMD, Soo if somehow you could buy a Ryzen 3600, with ddr4 16gb and a motherboard b450, that will be a winner, BF4 plays amazing with a 1660ti Nvidia card, for a system like that, easily you can use a 650w PSU, any case is good as long as you have good fans for the air flow

Thanks bro! Perhaps I can start by searching on NewEgg for these parts. I'm assuming that these components should give me a few years of good use before upgrading..lol Should I also order Windows 11 with this set up?

I manage to switch to windows 11 from windows 10, now that the bugs are some kinda fixed, at least is more responsive

Good to know! Ill make sure to get the airflow one

I’ve had many flat, tower, cubed and mini cases in the past (when a 33 Mhz CPU was cool) and the one thing that pissed me off the most was that there is no easy access to the case internals.

When I decided to build my rig, I wanted all the things I thought about in the past in this build and an inaccessible case was my real pet peeve.

The Corsair Obsidian Series 500D RGB SE Premium Mid-Tower Case with swing open doors really sold me on it.

Some cases have space issues with an AIO top mounted coolers.

Spoiler alert: It will kill the wallet.

PCpartpicker.com is an easy way to setup mock builds. Research the components and see what others are saying on other sites. pcpartpicker does tell you if components are compatible, but I'd still take it a step further and make sure the end result is what you really want. Reading about others builds and the parts specifics will help you a lot. Especially if you plan to build it yourself.

NewEgg has been getting some well deserved bad publicity lately due to scummy operations. Use at your own risk.

Seabee mentioned a larger case is nice and isn't wrong about that all. I have a prebuilt Asus ROG G20cb that looks cool but doesn't have a lot of room inside. Neat, but really tight fitment inside. Worst part about it is the mobo is limited power so I can't even add a larger PSU. Mobo won't use the extra watts if I add one. I recommend a mid tower case as well. It's so nice having room inside.

Might as well go Windows 11.

Hi Lode, Thanks for that info! I'll check them out and look around. I have dealt with newegg in the past and never had any issues. I guess things have changed over the last few years! I do like that Corsair 4000D airflow case that whitefish posted. I'm really considering these components for my build: Corsair 4000D airflow case/ B550 tomahawk mobo/ 750watt bronze PS/ 32gb ram/ 5800x 8core CPU/RX6800XT GPU and some other accessories.

this could be a nice one, for some 2-3 years, "if" you are not into heavy workloads or anything like that
