So the way EA handles it now is "hosting" your own server is bundled with buying the game. You don't need to pay anything additional to run your own server.
Their are positives and negatives with this.. but before I get into those I want to say that I quickly set up a Golmud server yesterday and got it going with me, Uni, Bebop and LionJim. It had bots as the backfill and a few other random people joined as the game went on.
The way anyone can create a server is through the EAs Portal map builder. It has two basic ways of doing this. The easy one is the standard map where you customize the players and weapons etc.
The second and more complex way is to actually edit the map itself. Meaning, its terrain and features like buildings.
As of now, the full editor for Golmud is not available so we can only set up Golmud with player, weapons, map type and time tweaks.
This is what I did yesterday and left everything as default except for fast vehicle spawn for a 45 minute or 1200 ticket countdown on Conquest.
The downside of everyone being able to host is that once you make a map it generates a code and anyone else can host that exact map you created. This will inevitably dilute a player base because it does not cost any additional money to host it.
Although you can only host one server at a time. So you can have a map rotation set up however you want but you cannot make several server rotations and have them all active under a single account.
And if the server is has no players for a certain time, I think its a week, then it goes offline and wont show up in the server browser. Also the current server browser sucks and its default settings make it hard to find servers due to it defaulting to slots open for parties or squads.
At some point during this year they are adding platoons back. I hope they do this in a way that we can show what servers the platoon has active and we can then start to build an organic population. I think platoons is the only hope for that to happen. Otherwise there are just too many servers that are live to choose from.
I will say, I find it interesting that the current 24/7 Golmud servers that are active and populated are both hardcore. It seems that there are a ton that show up in the server browser but only 2 seem to be full all the time.
I had fun playing with the few guys who got the server going and the bots. Honestly, sometimes bots play more consistently than idiots
My hope is once we have the full Golmud in the Portal editor I can make changes so its closer to the BF4 version in some aspects.
I think we have a consensus that the train and the flags south of the train play better but up north things are a bit too crowded. I think I can remove some of the clutter and maybe scale back some of the buildings too.
After yesterday, I am confident that having as little as 20 of us clan and regulars in a match would be a really fun time.
I think having consistency and seeing the same players over and over will create a sense of community as opposed to match making where everyone gets booted at the end of a round and you rarely see those people again.
