I got lucky, or so I thought and found a Netgear AC1750(R6400) at a thrift shop for $5. Even had the wall wart with it.

Took it home and booted it up and put it in AP mode to act as a wireless bridge from my main router. Did some speedtests and noticed it was only able to throughput about 50Mbps. Okay,.. read up and found out Netgear routers do that in AP mode(?). So I set it up hardwired on it's own subnet, running off my main router and it still only tput 50Mbps. Did several hard restarts and even rolled back the firmware. No luck.

Ended up finding a recent DD-WRT build and flashed with that. Router works great now but still only gets <600Mbps. Supposed to be gigabit..

I have an older Netgear N900 WNDR4500 that gets full gbit speeds. I am wondering if there is anyone in the world with an R6400 that isn't V1 or V2 which can run true gigabit. All of the Netgear threads on troubleshooting this leads me to believe this router isn't gigabit capable but people are happy to get 500-600Mbps results. I suppose I'm happy too, anything is better than <512Kbps.

I also upgraded all of my ethernet cables other than the switch in my closet which is CAT5E to CAT6. Older N900 router could handle full gbit but has all my stupid smart devices tied to it and I didn't want to go through the process of switching them to a new router. Might have to bite the bullet and setup everything again.

That's what I get for taking chances on used gear at stupid low prices.

I always love hearing about projects like this. Good luck resetting everything if you end up doing that. Do you have the CAT5E/CAT6 cables running through the walls?

I would like to believe the cable in the walls is CAT5e. The small comm closet my apartment was built with has all 5e. It holds my cable modem and has a separate switch to feed the rest of the rooms. I bought a 10pc of CAT6 cables because I wanted to rule out the possibility any of my old cables were to blame.
