Network problems- High packet loss low ping?

Hey guys so I was playing on the bf4 24/7 Golmud map and asked about some network issues. Basically games, Bf4 and Rocket league, act as if I have really high ping, even though it shows low. In Bf4 my ping is usually around 40-60 which is normal, but flying in cockpit view is super laggy and jumpy. In Rocket League my ping has actually been higher than usual, 80-110 vs 40-70. This problem started roughly a week and a half ago. I have changed nothing, not even the layout of my room. My housemate has noticed some issues, but doesn't game much other than a bit of LoL so I'm not sure how accurate it is. My downstairs housemate hasn't noticed and rarely plays online games. I never had issues for months, didn't matter who was doing what, other than the microwave. I am using an edimax usb adapter at the front of my case because the back has too much interference. I'm on a 5ghz network, speed test gives me 150+ mbps, low ping 17-50, and 20 upload. Not sure what the issues could be, or if it's just shitty Canadian internet. Thanks in advance!

Maybe you need to restart your modem, sometimes the heat up, I need that relief.... Other than that, you need your modem, then a router to be able to control the DHCP server and control the traffic

This is something many people have been dealing with for several months at this point, including myself. There are many people who complain in chat, but few ever go further than that, and it just gets lost in the noise. Whatever the problem is, it's not client-side. It's not you. There is a problem between you, and the server. As to the specific cause? Unsure. A server host or ISP node may be getting attacked however. Not something that would show up on the server dashboard.

I suggested you come to the forums to see if we can figure it out and im glad you did. Like Karek said usually no one follows through.

Is it possible to test a wired connection?

I had a few months of issues a few months ago but it all seems to be cleared up aside from some lag in the AH or Littlebird.

Are there times where it worse and what are those times?

If it started a week and a half ago it's probably something in your residence … something you have running in the background or something one of your roomates have running?
Your internet speed is better then mine (I'm also in Canada), but I rarely get over 1ms ping when I test connection speed to most server's
And your wireless so you could possibly have a neighbor on your network also...you need to check network traffic.

I'll try and reset the modem, that hasn't worked in the past but it really should be step 1. It's definitely not a server issue as I'm getting issues in other games. The available networks in my area haven't changed, although I see my printers wifi is available which is odd because i have the wifi turned off on it. I wonder if that could be the issue since its right behind my computer. Not sure why it wouldn't have been a problem in the past but I don't know much about radio signals. I'll report back tomorrow with an update. And while i could test wired, it will be a bit of a pain in the ass which I almost guarantee I'll have no issues over wired, somethings interfering or changed with the wireless, just not sure what. Annoyingly enough Windows 10 killed my network load through task manager. I appreciate the help guys!

We're here to help. Let us know what you find. Sometimes its a matter of prioritizing network traffic with the router.

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest Run this and let us know what the results are, especially with bufferbloat. If your router or modem are not handling packets properly they could be getting dropped before they are sent server side and that will cause lag and other issues even if you have a really good ping.

The tricky bit is, that our host, NFO, runs most of the BF4 servers these days, so a node/ISP attack could reflect on all servers in their network. Though, if that's not the problem, then it's EA/DICE's fault.

hey guys sorry for not replying. Long story short still have the problem although maybe slightly less severe. I ran a dslreport test and everything came back normal/good other than bufferbloat. I'll look at my router settings and see what i can adjsut, but these Shaw/Telus provided router modem combos are usually lacking on features.

Nevermind I fixed it. For some reason my adapter was running on any wireless mode, so I was connected to the network in 2.4ghz. I switched it back to 802.11a/n and it's back in 5ghz. Explains alot everything nicely, just not sure what prompted it to switch back into Auto. Oh well thanks for suggestion!

Awesome and glad it fixed. I've had my fair share of stupid fixes.

Also those combo modem routers usually dont allow much tweaking.

Well I got ahead of myself. The fix seemed good for a day and half. Ping isn't quite as high (maybe it seems to be getting worse), but still seems like packet loss problems. Rocket League is much more noticeable, but still fairly noticeable in BF4 helicopters. My wifi adapter says it still in 5ghz and i ran another test and my bufferbloat went from an F to a D, the rest seems fairly normal. I can find a Rocket League forum of some sorts, as the issue isn't apparent in Bf4 if need be.

Can you do a ping test for us to see if it is a networking issue? Watch for packets to be slow or time out. You can copy by highlighting the text and then pressing ENTER (or clicking the button in the top left)

Press the Windows Button to pull up Start
Begin typing: cmd
Start will pull up the "app" Command Prompt
Click on the icon to open the program (a black box will appear)
Type in: ping -t 8.8.8.8 and press Enter
A continuous "ping" should begin to show the latency (in seconds/miliseconds) from the IP address used - in this case a Google Public DNS
