[Operation El Dorado Canyon] April 15th, 1986 USS America and the USS Saratoga in the Mediterranean. I was the night shift supervisor for the IWT shop. We supported Communication, Navigation and Weapons Systems on the F-14. We had no idea on the ship what was going on the night of the attack on Libya but what was different is that our birds were leaving with a full complement of Sidewinders, Sparrow and Phoenix Missiles. They were fully loaded for A/A and the mission was to provide CAP for the strike Packages on Libya. It would have been cool to know what was going on but at the time it was just another night of flight ops with a greater sense of urgency. I think back to these days and the cool part was it was a bunch of 20 year old kids who were on their game and we were the baddest motherfuckers in the land.... A-6 Intruders, A-7 Corsairs and F-14 Tomcats.
