Team,

I am looking for a recommendation for a wireless AP for my home. I want one that will cover my entire house. 3 floors, the driveway, the deck, complete coverage.

I currently have a ASUS AC2400 4x4 Dual Band Gigabit router. It was supposed to be a good one but it does not have the range or power for the whole house... I have two daughters and a wife that stream all the time and we have YoutubeTV streaming to 3 TVs.

Note: I do not plan to game wirelessly. my rig is hardwired.

I see some of these multi-unit systems are popular where you have a main unit and a bunch about the house.

I know some of you are experts at this so thought i would ask.

thanks,

Put the router hardiwre in the 2nd floor and if you can in the center of the house, that's how you will be covering the complete house

From what I know, which isn't a lot, you're better off going with multiple routers, daisy chaining them simply for the sake of cost.

If you really want to play around with higher powered signals, you could try an amplified antenna but it starts costing more than linking routers.

Remember, with radio frequencies it's all about line of sight. Where you might be able to wirelessly connect routers upstairs, the basement or garage could require you run a cable so that signal isn't compromised.

I know a lot of Netgear routers have the ability to work/link together. It's an option built into their firmware.

DD-WRT also has the option to bridge wireless signals but can be difficult to setup depending on the firmware build you are using. I only say it can be difficult because limited hardware limits the routers capability. There are other open source router firmwares, I just haven't used any.

Be way better indeed... cash wise!

An upgrade could be the RT-AX3000 from Asus, as better amplification with 9db antenas, that's alotta power, if that's what your looking for

I am using eero which is a pretty good mesh network. Once we got it in place, we have had no complaints from the family with any dead spots.

thanks for all the great suggestions... i am reading through all the links you provided.

I am a Tesla guy and i am reading they have one that is designed to reach the panels and storage bays that can be up to 300 feet away from the house... if i find anything on that will let you know

We use Ubiquiti.

I use this at home https://amplifi.com/gamers-edition

No complains so far. We power over 2500 locations using this company products. Powerful, reliable and reasonable prices.

I agree with this. Ubiquiti makes a great product. I have the edge router X and the AP lite. It has really good coverage. The setup isnt exactly plug and play but its great to build out a mesh network and monitoring usage.
