Kerry Hopkins, EA’s VP of legal and government affairs, insists that the company’s randomised purchases aren’t loot boxes, but rather “surprise mechanics.” In an oral evidence session with the UK Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Committee, Hopkins compares the mechanics to surprise toys, which have been around “for years, whether it’s Kinder Eggs, or Hatchimals, or LOL Surprise.”

The UK government’s investigation on gaming was announced earlier this year, and it concerns much more than just loot boxes – everything from game addiction to the ways the government can support the VR industry is on the list. Whether any legislative action results from these investigations remains to be seen.

For reals! Whats wrong with these people.. Lol!

They died long ago. All we have left is the festering carcass of Dice and EA. Just wait until the sun comes up and hits it, the smell will be horrifying.

The comparison to toys and candies shows they are grasping at straws. Kinder eggs do not supplement a larger candy purchase in a way that puts others at a disadvantage.

Even BF3 & BF4 premium was iffy for me, but it gave more content (maps) and lord knows I've gotten my moneys worth in hours played.

I miss buying a game once and having a full experience, on par with other players based solely on skill.
Something tells me the only remedy to the greed is seeing more and more AAA titles move to a "games as a service" layout to nickle and dime us. That could be a positive as they would likely keep game servers and updates alive longer though - just look at world of warcraft (until this year).

What do I know though, I am just a young, angry murican.

Very well said.

It's the monetization model that is most widely used today in the gaming and app industry.
