Yeah, it's similar. Canada Day was originally called Dominion Day on July 1, 1867 when 4 provinces joined as a self governing dominion of Great Britain.
We are also an independent nation but keep the Queen of England as our monarch, that's why we have a Prime Minister and not a President.

In the USA, it's known as Independence Day, the 4th of July. That day, in 1776, they declared their independence from Great Britain and elected a president who is both Head of State and of Government.
