On December 17, 1777, France recognized the independence of the British colonies in America: Vergennes, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Louis XVI, informed the American representatives, Benjamin Franklin, Silas Deane and Arthur Lee, of the King's decision, and their proposes to sign, in addition to the commercial treaty proposed by the American commissioners, a treaty of alliance. This will be done on February 6, 1778, at the Hôtel de Coislin in Paris. France will thus be the first nation to recognize the independence of the United States.
