Discord help...maybe?

Greetings all,
Dumbass questions here but that's how you learn. Can someone give me a brief synopsis of Discord and how it is used? Is it keyboard chat or VOIP? I've had it downloaded/installed for several years. But when joining BF4 servers that supply Discord link it seems to be a pain in the butt to join, and then it doesn't seem to add anything to my gaming experience. What am I missing?

It's a social platform. It does have voice channels, though they do not always get used. So, it's mostly text. If you're not using voice, then it doesn't do much for your in-game experience. It's a good way to stay in touch though.

thanks for having the courage to ask this, because I don't understand it either. Back in my day, all we had was tin cans and strings which we would use to avoid injun attacks and the like. Discord is a new language to me.... grr.
