I thought I would get nostalgic. Here is a pic of my pre-Dell buyout Alienware laptop. To the right is my Surface Pro 4. The laptop is 4 years old but still screams when I'm on the road!

That's my rum and coke on the left :courage:

Nice! Ive never gamed on a laptop. Usually just build desktops. Ive heard good things about alienware builds.

LOL! Carp when I travel for work I bring my surface Pro as well. My laptop is a Lenovo with a GTX M970. I dont hardcore game on it as I leave that to my desktop. The desktop is a 7700K water cooled at 5.0 g and a GTX1080/.

Wow Wiz. 5.0 Ghz is impressive. Do you run a custom water cooler or off the shelf? Whats your voltage and max temps at load? I have a i5 4690K and it doesn't seem to have much headroom for overclocking. I was able to get it stable at 4.2 fairly easily but it wasn't stable at 4.4. I probably could have pushed my volts up a bit more but didn't like its temps at load. I have a cheaper liquid cooler.

I wound up setting it back to stock after some irregularities in frame rates in BF4 and BF1. Apparently BF1 doesn't play well with overclocks.

I gave up gaming on laptops long ago. It was far to expensive to try and keep up with games. I've got a GTX 1070 and a Ryzen 1700, set up in a way that it should be easy to upgrade down the line, without replacing everything. $500-700 is far more... palpable than a new $3,500 Laptop every two years.

To your point, I will probably go back to a custom build next rig.

From my logging it seems most games I have are all video bound, very very few are actually processor bound, the last build I did the thing that tripped me up was my monitor refresh I was an early 4K owner before any of the video cards could even touch 4K so I'm due for a decent 4K monitor that can actually keep up with my Nvidia 1080.. my rig will do between 70-90 FPS @ 3840 x 2160 but the monitor makes it a poor experience.. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236399 don't buy this one for 4K gaming....lol..

Alienware is Dell.. In Canada Dell is utter rubbish. I've had far better experiences with Asus ROG Laptops. MY Asus ROG VW75 is still pumping out decent FPS with its GTX 760m. It's wayyyy obsolete now but still good for a few games when the need for portability arises. :)

Maybe Alienware has stepped up their game? They made incredibly powerful high quality systems until Dell bought them and that's when it all went downhill.

In my original post: "My pre-Dell buy-out Alienware". The manufacture date is 8-20-2006. When my pop passed he left it to me 4.5 years ago. This is where i get off the train. Take care of yourselves....I'll see you on the other side.

My Asus is a 2012 and it can run BF4 and DCS Flaming Cliffs albeit not on the highest setting but it's still chugging along. :)
