I've been thinking about getting into airsoft; it seems fun, like laser tag but more intense. Does anyone here do airsoft? How expensive is a quality airsoft gun and besides the gun, ammunition, and clothing, what else might you need?
I've been a paintballer for a couple years. I prefer it. I've heard the community is less serious and more about the fun, less people pretending to be military. We have milsim of course, but everyone knows it's just fun and games.
I used to airsoft every weekend for years and years and it was/is a blast to play. However, the big caveat to having fun is playing with people who are not cheaters and will call shots. One way to help with that is to play with powerful guns so they know and hurt when they get hit. We also started playing with spring before electric became the standard and eventually moved to Electric. (that tells you how long ago we started). Funny enough, my brother and I were in discussions with Japanese companies (Tanaka and marui) to be importers when we were teens. We even got a sample shipment from them but couldn't get past the language barrier. We were just a couple of farm kids in northern IL with not a lot of resources for International business.
I will say, I have no idea how the gameplay is now as I have 'retired' and haven't ever played at a public event. I have done Paintball quite a bit but airsoft for me was always with friends and friends of friends only.
Hi Mr Whitefish. How about a Prone-only Golmud Server? We start off but instead of rushing to D like always. We all lie prone and first squad to get to D in prone position gets like I dunno a prize or something?

Sorry, didn't even answer the questions: Guns can be expensive for good quality but you can find value. Most other stuff is relatively cheap - good googles and possibly a mask for face protection would be the major costs. Like any hobby, it can get as expensive as you want. Couple of stories:
1. BB's were extremely hard to get and expensive in the old days. We used to spend hours walking around our industrial battlefield searching for bb's and picking them up for reuse. There was a 'gold rush' for who could get there first and get the most and using flashlights would help illuminate them. Manufacturers always say don't reuse and we were like 'The heck you say....we can't afford to buy them as much as we play'. Some did require cleaning.
2. I spent a half hour at LAX with TSA arguing whether a package of 5000 airsoft plastic bb's were ammunition or not. They were dense enough to show up on the scanner and he claimed they were firearm ammunition and wanted to confiscate them. I told him they were inert plastic pellets and finally was let go and got to keep them. What a moron.
